Growing and sharing at the Marlborough Community Gardens
About 60 people came along on November 4, 2021 to see how this enthusiastic group of gardeners are growing food, sharing knowledge and working together for a healthy future.
Guest speakers Mike Trought (kumura growing) and Dion Mundy (beekeepers), and other members covered what's involved:
-
100 gardeners, 74 plots
-
Sharing seedlings, knowledge and food
-
Careful irrigation and mulching to conserve water
-
Workshops on compost making, chemical-free pest control, soil health
-
Commitment to Te Ao Māori, rongoā medicinal plants and harakeke plantings
-
Connections with a wide range of cultures and organisations
-
Volunteers working for more than a decade for community good
The morning was rounded off with home-made baking, featuring ingredients from the gardens. Congratulations to the winners of the Community Innovation Award, sponsored by Kūmānu Environmental.
